The Brief

There were two main items to consider during the design process for this site. The clients wanted to be able to sit and enjoy their existing Koi Carp pond. They also wanted a covered outdoor-decked area where they could practice their tai chi in. The brief also included the need to keep an existing summerhouse located behind the pond area, tackle the haphazard boundaries, remove all lawn areas and improve the lower level outside the house.

My design

The curved deck area outside the summerhouse cantilevers over the pond and enables one to sit and view the carp, whilst providing vital shade for the fish. To help nestle the pond into the scheme we edged it with Indian sandstone paving which matches the stepping stone pathway and patio level below. We also created a stone waterfall and shallow planting area within the pond to help bed it into its surroundings further.

The tai chi arbour is constructed from softwood timbers and bespoke Perspex screens designed and attached to the back creating a calming Japanese aesthetic. The large deck at the base of the arbour provides the space for tai chi and yoga. The sound of running water can be heard from the bamboo waterspout and granite bowl water feature. At night the garden is transformed by lighting, the arbor is backlit and creates a stunning area to sit and reflect.
