The Brief

This large garden is located in Bath and enjoys a wonderful vista both inside and outside its boundary fence. The client wanted to work with the existing layout of the garden as far as possible, however the main lawn sloped down to the side fence sharply and a design solution for this area was required. The upper lawn was bumpy and a giant pampas grass dominated the space.

My design

The main lawn was drawn back from the boundary fence and retained by a new sleeper wall. This created a new route of flow around the garden by way of incorporating a new path that leads to the woodland area below. The pathway was designed using sleepers and consolidated gravel and planting beds were designed on both sides to soften the edges and bed it into the landscape. This is now called ‘the woodland walk’ and the clients enjoy a stroll around.

The main lawn was also shaped into a more curvilinear design that flowed down to the lower lower, which was also replaced. The incorporation of more planting beds around the perimeter softened the scheme into the landscape further and provided more colour and year round interest.
