The Brief

The team designed and built both the front and back gardens of this large family house in Bathampton. The family wanted a garden that they could use for relaxation and entertaining. The wish to incorporate a space outside the house for dining and another separate area for relaxation was requested, as was the desire to level the sloping lawn. It was also noted that the view from the back garden down the side of the house to the front should be obscured to aid privacy.

My design

The contemporary design and materials chosen reflect and harmonise with the design aesthetic of the house. A large patio area near the kitchen doors was created for dining, entertaining and lounging. Its honed limestone provides a particularly contemporary aesthetic that was also used to edge the lawn to tie the patio in with the rest of the garden. A decked area under the existing field maple provides a further relaxation area for the family to enjoy in the cool of the shade.

The planting and bespoke pots throughout the garden define the different areas and create privacy within each zone. We leveled the lawn by building a low sleeper wall along the existing fence line and incorporating a wide planting bed to soften the length of this boundary. The same materials were used in the front garden where we also incorporated a green roof on top of the porch. This can be seen from inside the house as one walks down the internal staircase.
